A fifth generation Californian whose great-grandfather fought the fires of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
Fernandez earned his BA in photography from Humboldt State University where he studied under Don Anton. After a brief stint as a professional chef, he resumed his studies and was awarded an MFA from Mills College, Oakland California in 1998 where he studied under Catherine Wagner.
currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
"In June of 2011 I started seriously practicing the wet plate collodion process. I use both modern and vintage view cameras with a mix of period lenses that date from the 1850's to the 1930's. The process is time consuming and often frustrating, but the results when successful are cathartic and satisfying."
